Introduction Diesel engines come in two types, two stroke or four stroke. This simply means that with a two stroke engine there is a power stroke every second movement of the piston. For four stroke engines this happens on every fourth piston movement, (intake, compression, injection (power) and exhaust. Diesel engines are by far more efficient and reliable than petrol engines with the same output of power. Generally a diesel engine is 40% more efficient in terms of miles per gallon. There are three categories for diesel engines in the industry. Low Speed Engine: These are the largest and most powerful diesel engines, up to 15m tall. They are used to power ships. These are two stroke engines and the power outputs is up to 80MW which operates at between 6U to 120 rpm. They are able to run on low grade and therefore low viscosity fuel, they do require the fuel to be heated prior to injection. Medium Speed Engine: These engines are more often used to power electric generators and are mostly four stroke units. Running at between 300 and 1200 rpm, you can set the speed depending on the generation of frequency required either between 50 or 60 Hz. Diesel engines can run on an number of different fuel types, diesel fuel from crude oil is the most common. These days good quality diesel fuel can be obtained from alcohol and vegetable oil, also known as Biodiesel. Look out for future diesel engines to be most fitted to work with Biodisel. |
