Buying Tips

Prices vary considerably depending on what type of generator you are looking to buy. The smallest hobbyist generator that you can pick up at a hardware store costs roughly $400. A massive, standby generator can be as much as $40,000.
Portable generators-
A 5kW portable can cost around $600 or $800. If you move up to the 11kW size then its goes to about $2,300. These are most dealership prices which offer more variety, and durability than retail store generators.
Renting portable generators is a very common cost effective route to take, with prices as low $75 a week.
A rough idea for standby generators is $300 to $500 per kW, installed. A general guide to prices which include, delivery, setup, connection and the required transfer switch.
-12kW: $4,000 to $6,000
-25kW: $9,000 to $13,000
-75kW: $20,000 and up
Don’t forget to comparison shop among dealers.
Most generators won’t need more than a yearly check up and maintenance. Other than that they should run for many years. It’s best to find a service plan that includes annual servicing. Pricing will vary on the type of generator. Most dealers will offer at least a 2 year warranty. Make sure it covers all working parts, some only cover certain components of a generator.
