Caterpillar Diesel Engine 18/03/2008 The diesel engine industry is experiencing major overhauls with stricter emission standards being required throughout many states and countries, and sweeping changes in the truck-making business. Caterpillar diesel engines are taking all these changes seriously and reconsidering their place in the market. Top executive of Caterpillar Inc, Jim Owens of the worlds largest construction and earth-moving equipment maker, said last week the company is still looking into what options it has with Caterpillar diesel engine division. The U.S. diesel engine and truck making industry is undergoing major changes as manufacturers are starting to bring their engines in-house and produce on their own diesel engines, leaving some engine manufacturers like Caterpillar diesel engines out in the cold. Jim Owens Chief Executive and Chairman of Caterpillar said at a big construction equipment industry conference, We are still considering many alternatives. I think its important, personally, that we find a way to successfully play in the on-highway truck industry. Big and medium sized truck manufacturers like Paccar Inc and Navistar International, build trucks most of the trucks seen on the freight highways. Previously manufacturers such as these have used Caterpillar diesel engines and other independent suppliers for their diesel engines. If this market disappears Caterpillar diesel engine manufacturing maybe ceased all together. Owens said, "We have an engine, we sell to all the other OEMs and we have a contract that goes to 2010, but beyond that we have to develop new product technology for the on-highway truck market and we have to decide how were going to market that product. It may not be the end of Caterpillar diesel engines as we know it, Owens said there are some big decisions to make before production is closed down. We could exit. We could partner. We could acquire. |
