Caterpillar Diesel Engine 12/03/2008 Among some of the many developments in the world of earth moving and construction equipment that was showcased at this years ConExpo 2008 in Las Vegas, hybrid engines were introduced into the big machine market for the first time. Hybrid diesel electric drives engines have been seen in cars for some time now, but this is the first time an electric drivetrain engine has been used in an earth moving machine. The D7E is a track-type tractor powered by a 235 HP C9 Caterpillar diesel engine. The D7E caterpillar diesel engine drives a generator that produces electricity for two electric motors that drive the tracks with a differential steering system. By using an electric drivetrain a mechanical transmission is no longer necessary. Edward Zwilling, engineering manager for advanced drivetrains said, There are no gears to shift. The caterpillar diesel engine uses the same regenerative capabilities in the same way hybrid-electrical engines do. The tractor captures the energy from slowing down and sends it back to the engine flywheel which then runs the hydraulic pumps that move the implements. The electric drive system also produces enough energy to power attachments that are normally powered by an engine belt, as well as driving the tractor. Caterpillar diesel engines powers heavy dozing and grading applications that need immense power. Zwilling said, We take nearly the full power of the engine to the ground. As well as increase in power and a decrease in belts in the machine, the Caterpillar diesel engine generating electrical power also promises better fuel consumption bringing a much needed cost effective solution to todays rising cost of fuel. The D7E is reported to offer 20 percent better fuel consumption as well as about 25 percent more material per gallon of fuel than the same sized conventional D7 tractors. The electric drivetrain also offers less wear and tear with simpler mechanical components and roughly 60 percent less moving parts than previous D7 tractors. |
